I love books. I love old books, I love new books. I can't resist new spins on classic books, so you can imagine how excited I was when I saw the BabyLit books. BabyLit is a series of board books designed to introduce classic literature to babies. The books teach counting, opposites, colors, etc. each in the context of a classic novel. The series is written by Jennifer Adams, with darling illustrations by Alison Oliver. My favorite editions are the Little Miss Austen books.
Pride & Prejudice is a counting primer. Let's count the rich gentlemen and marriage proposals in the novel, shall we? Don't forget that Mr. Darcy proposed to Lizzy twice!
Sense & Sensibility is an opposites primer. What's the opposite of married?? Single, of course! Just ask Marianne and Elinor. And who is the polar opposite of the stoic Colonel Brandon? Willoughby. Duh.
These books are stylish, educational and clearly made for the adult Austen fanatic. I ordered them from Amazon for about $9.00 each and I am thrilled to add them to my Austen collection. If you aren't into Austen, don't worry. BabyLit also includes Moby Dick, Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, and even a fashion primer based on Anna Karenina (for the baby that can't get enough of Russian tragedies). These books are just adorable! They are the perfect baby shower gifts, additions to the brainy baby's nursery, or part of your own library. If you are decorating a nursery, you can even get prints of the illustration on the BabyLit website. I'll be ordering the Little Miss Bronte books next!
