In my last house, my living room had lots of dark wood and a shabby chic, blue and white motif. I loved the room, but it had started to feel a bit heavy and old fashioned. When I moved into my new home, one of my main goals was to brighten up my decor and add some pops of fun, cheery colors. It's taken almost two years to call the room 'done', but I can finally say that I love the space and am ready to share some photos here with you!
I purchased this town home as a short-sale, and waited almost a year to get the keys. When the time came that the house was mine, all plans to hire painters and change the flooring went out the window. I was just too excited to move in, so the walls stayed cream and the tiles are still driving me crazy. Fortunately, these cream elements prompted me to furnish the space in shades of white that I could then set off with colorful accessories.
My first and favorite purchase was the white credenza that holds my TV and components. This was a Craigslist purchase, and I am in love with it! I was never a fan of white furniture till I got this piece, and I am now forever converted. I can't imagine any other color in the room. Next, I found this amazing vintage coffee table on Craigslist. It is an authentic La Barge brass and glass table with the cutest hoofed feet. Again, I had never imagined I'd pick a glass coffee table, but it really is the right thing for the space. Between the white credenza and glass table, the room looks much more spacious than it really is. I finished the cream palette off with this gorgeous Moroccan diamond rug that was a steal at Rugs USA. These three pieces set the stage for accessories in shades of pink, blue and green.
The easiest way for me to add color was with patterned accent pillows and a ton of decorative books. On my grey chesterfield sofa, I paired a fabulous NestaHome cactus pillow with a graphic pillow from Ikea. Similarly, I have an Aztec print West Elm pillow next to a graphic pillow from HomeGoods on my white Ikea chair. A bookcase is styled with art and books, some of which I picked up at the thrift store just for their colorful spines. Add in a few decorative pieces (mostly thrifted from Goodwill) and some pretty green houseplants, and the the look is complete!
Emmie and I sure are happy in our new home and this colorful living space is the icing on the cake!
